BUSHFIRE UPDATE: Posted on the Western KI Caravan Park & Wildlife Reserve facebook page on January 6, 2020.
Today we were finally able to return to the park and it is with overwhelming sadness that we found our house and brand new office building burnt to the ground. We have also had significant damage to all the major infrastructure and all this will take a time to rebuild and repair before we can reopen. We were very relieved however to see that we still play home to at least 10 koalas and many kangaroos and wallabies and, that we have only lost 3 of our 13 cabins. This relief however comes with great sadness and devastation for our neighbouring businesses and friends who have lost most, if not all of their property and surrounding bush land.
We extend our gratitude to the combined emergency services who alerted us to the upcoming danger last Thursday at Parndana’s community meeting, prompting us to evacuate our guests early Friday morning before they were put in any danger. Once all our guests had left, it was an easier decision for us to evacuate. Thanks also to police officer Robin for alerting Mark that it was time to leave.
We also extend our gratitude to all the firefighters and volunteers who played a part in defending the park for us putting their own lives in great danger. Without their selfless act our park would be much worse off.
Fires are a devastating and cruel part of our existence in the west end and we urge everyone to consider evacuating early when faced with a bushfire.
We will rebuild and we will overcome this but for now we will have to remain closed, allowing us time to clean up and repair. We will be making contact with all future bookings to work through each individual situation. We thank you for your patience and cooperation in this time of need.
If you would like to help Mark & Fiona rebuild, they have a message for all concerned:
We have had an overwhelming amount of questions from people wondering how they can help the park and wildlife after these bushfires. There is a go fund me page set up to help if anyone wishes to donate.
We can live with a few items of clothing however the wildlife will need food to get them though until revegetation appears.
If anyone would like to donate we would be very appreciative and of course, once we are back up and running we would love to see new or returning guests at the caravan park.
